Congenital Lobar Emphysema

Over the past four years (1360-1364) we have surgically treated seven infants for lobar emphysema. The pathologic lesion in all patients was in upper lobe of the left lung. Respiratory distress and pneumonia are the cardinal symptoms of patients with this abnormality. Diagnosis is confirmed by chest x-ray. The treatment of choice is lobectomy of affected lobe.

The left lung was judged to show congenital hypoplasia because of the reduced number of bronchi and arteries, its small volume, and a total alveolar number less than that normally found at birth. This last was ...

Asymptomatic congenital oesophageal cyst infiltrating the lung: an unusual complication.

An asymptomatic 14-year-old boy presented with minor chest trauma. Chest X-ray showed opacity in the upper zone of the left lung. Further investigations with magnetic resonance imaging showed it to be a posterior mediastinal mass with a fistula to the lung, along with cystic changes in the left upper lobe of lung. Left upper lobectomy with excision of the mass was performed. Histological examin...
